Proper Storage Methods For Activated Alumina Adsorbents

Jun 29, 2026 Leave a message

Many users believe that an activated alumina adsorbent can be used normally as long as the product is not physically damaged. However, once activated alumina absorbs moisture, its internal pore structure becomes occupied by water, directly affecting its subsequent adsorption performance.

Moisture-contaminated activated alumina may result in the following problems:

Significantly reduced adsorption capacity and drying efficiency;

Increased outlet dew point of compressed air or process gases;

Shortened service life and more frequent replacement;

Dust generation or slight particle agglomeration;

Increased regeneration energy consumption and higher operating costs.

For continuously operating systems such as air separation units, PSA oxygen generation systems, and natural gas processing facilities, these issues may affect production stability.

Proper Storage Methods for Activated Alumina Adsorbents

1. Keep the Original Packaging Sealed

Activated alumina is usually supplied in moisture-proof packaging to minimize moisture absorption during transportation. After receiving the product, keep the original packaging intact and do not open it until it is ready for use.

If the package has been opened, reseal it immediately to avoid prolonged exposure to air.

2. Store in a Dry and Well-Ventilated Warehouse

The storage environment should be clean, dry, and well ventilated.

Avoid storing the product in:

Damp warehouses;

Basements;

Areas near doors or windows;

Places where condensation is likely to form.

A proper storage environment can effectively reduce ambient humidity and minimize premature moisture absorption by activated alumina.

3. Avoid Direct Contact with Water Sources

Keep the product away from rain, standing water, steam pipelines, and other areas where moisture may be present.

During transportation, appropriate rain protection measures should also be taken to prevent the packaging from becoming damp.

4. Store off the Ground and Away from Walls

It is recommended to store the product on pallets, keeping it at a certain distance from the ground and away from warehouse walls.

This storage method helps prevent ground moisture from affecting the packaging and improves air circulation within the warehouse.

5. Avoid Prolonged Exposure to Direct Sunlight

Although activated alumina itself is resistant to high temperatures, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may accelerate the aging of the packaging material, thereby reducing its moisture-proof performance.

Therefore, it is recommended to store the product in a cool, shaded area away from direct sunlight.

6. Do Not Store with Volatile Chemicals

Activated alumina not only adsorbs moisture but may also adsorb certain volatile substances in the surrounding air.

Therefore, it should not be stored together with acids, alkalis, organic solvents, or chemicals with strong odors to avoid product contamination.

Recommendations After Opening the Package

After opening the package, minimize the product's exposure to air.

The following practices are recommended:

Remove only the amount required for immediate use;

Reseal the package immediately after use;

Store the remaining product in a dry environment;

In high-humidity areas, use the opened product as soon as possible.

Even if there are no visible changes, prolonged exposure to humid air may reduce the adsorption performance of activated alumina.

How to Determine Whether Activated Alumina Has Absorbed Moisture

If any of the following conditions occur during operation, the activated alumina may have absorbed excessive moisture:

A continuously increasing outlet dew point;

Noticeably reduced drying performance;

Shortened adsorption cycles;

Increased product weight;

Slight particle agglomeration or powder formation.

If necessary, the moisture content, adsorption capacity, or regeneration performance of the product can be tested for further confirmation.
