How To Use KMnO₄ Activated Alumina To Remove Formaldehyde And Odorous Gases?

Working Principle of KMnO₄ Activated Alumina

KMnO₄ activated alumina is an oxidizing adsorbent formed by uniformly loading potassium permanganate onto the pore surface of activated alumina.

Activated alumina itself has a high specific surface area and abundant pore structure, enabling it to quickly adsorb pollutants from the air; while potassium permanganate has strong oxidizing capabilities, further oxidizing and decomposing harmful gases.

This material mainly undergoes two processes when treating pollutants:

First, gas molecules are adsorbed through the pore structure of activated alumina; subsequently, potassium permanganate reacts with the pollutants in an oxidation reaction, converting them into harmless or low-hazard substances.

Compared to ordinary adsorbents that can only "store pollutants," KMnO₄ activated alumina can truly "decompose pollutants," thus resulting in a more lasting and stable purification effect.

How to remove formaldehyde?

Ordinary activated carbon is prone to saturation and secondary release after adsorbing formaldehyde, while KMnO₄ activated alumina can gradually decompose formaldehyde through an oxidation reaction.

During the oxidation process, formaldehyde is converted into carbon dioxide and water, thereby reducing the concentration of harmful substances in the air.

Its advantages include:

· High removal efficiency

· Less prone to secondary release

· Longer service life

· More suitable for continuous operation systems

· Stable performance

Therefore, this material is widely used in air purification equipment, central air conditioning systems, and industrial waste gas treatment devices.

More Effective at Removing Odors

Besides formaldehyde, KMnO₄ activated alumina also exhibits excellent removal capabilities for a variety of odorous gases.

For example:

H₂S (hydrogen sulfide)

NH₃ (ammonia)

SO₂ (sulfur dioxide)

VOCs (volatile organic compounds)

Amine gases

Acidic gases

These gases often have irritating odors or are corrosive, and potassium permanganate can oxidize them into stable compounds, thereby effectively reducing odor concentration.

KMnO₄ activated alumina has become a common deodorizing and purifying material, especially in wastewater treatment plants, garbage transfer stations, chemical plants, and the electronics manufacturing industry.

Why is KMnO₄ activated alumina more suitable for industrial systems?

Industrial waste gas treatment typically features complex gas composition, high humidity, and long operating times.

KMnO₄ activated alumina offers the following advantages:

· High mechanical strength, less prone to pulverization

· Low pressure drop, suitable for large adsorption towers

· Stable oxidation capacity

· Suitable for continuous operation

· Significantly effective for treating low-concentration pollutants

· Adjustable potassium permanganate loading according to operating conditions

Compared to traditional adsorption materials, it requires less maintenance and has a more advantageous overall operating cost.
