How To Improve Lube Oil Regeneration Efficiency With Activated Alumina?

Sep 10, 2026 Leave a message

During long-term use, lube oil will gradually accumulate moisture, oxidation products, and other impurities that affect oil quality. In order to restore the performance of lube oil, industrial production usually uses filtration, adsorption, refining, and other methods for regeneration treatment. Among them, activated alumina, as a granular adsorbent material with a well-developed pore structure, can be used in lube oil purification and regeneration processes.

However, it should be noted that improving lube oil regeneration efficiency is not simply a matter of increasing the amount of activated alumina used. The particle size, specific surface area, pore volume, pore structure, mechanical strength, and actual operating conditions of activated alumina will all affect its performance.

Choosing the Right Particle Size Is an Important Factor in Improving Efficiency

For some lube oil regeneration processes, 0.5–1mm activated alumina is a specification worth considering. Compared with larger particles, 0.5–1mm particles have a relatively shorter internal mass transfer distance. When the oil passes through the adsorbent bed, the target components in the oil need to first contact the surface of the activated alumina and then further enter its internal pore channels. Under appropriate operating conditions, smaller particles are beneficial for shortening this mass transfer path.

At the same time, 0.5–1mm is granular activated alumina rather than powder, so it can still be loaded as a granular bed in suitable equipment and combined with subsequent filtration and solid-liquid separation.

However, smaller particle size is not always better. If the particles are too fine, they may increase the requirements for bed pressure drop, fines, and filtration. Therefore, in practical applications, an appropriate balance needs to be found between mass transfer, flow, pressure drop, and particle separation.

Specific Surface Area and Pore Volume Are Also Important

In addition to particle size, the specific surface area and pore structure of activated alumina are also important factors affecting its application performance.

Activated alumina has a well-developed pore structure. After the oil comes into contact with the adsorbent, it can further enter the internal pores of the particles. A reasonable pore structure can provide more internal contact space for the adsorption process.

Therefore, when purchasing a product, focusing only on particle size while ignoring specific surface area and pore volume cannot fully determine whether a type of activated alumina is suitable for lube oil regeneration.

The Mechanical Strength of Activated Alumina Cannot Be Ignored

During the lube oil regeneration process, if activated alumina needs to be loaded in an adsorption bed for long-term use, mechanical strength is also an indicator that needs to be considered.

Activated alumina may be subjected to impact and friction during transportation, loading, and long-term operation. If the mechanical strength of the particles is insufficient, breakage and wear may occur, generating more fines.

Excessive fines may not only increase the filtration burden but may also affect the normal operation of the adsorbent bed.
