How To Choose Activated Alumina For Low Dew Point Drying Applications?

Jun 25, 2026 Leave a message

Activated alumina is a highly porous adsorbent material with a large specific surface area, excellent water adsorption capacity, and high mechanical strength. Its main advantages include high adsorption capacity, excellent abrasion resistance, low dust generation, and superior crush strength. Therefore, activated alumina is widely used as a pre-drying layer or primary drying layer in industrial gas dehydration systems.

What Factors Should Be Considered for Low Dew Point Applications?

1.Water Adsorption Capacity

Water adsorption capacity is an important indicator for evaluating the adsorption performance of activated alumina.

For low dew point applications, it is recommended to select products with:

• High static water adsorption capacity
• Stable dynamic adsorption performance

A higher water adsorption capacity allows the adsorbent to remove more moisture, thereby extending the operating cycle.

2.Specific Surface Area

The specific surface area determines the number of available adsorption sites.

Typically:

• Standard products: 280–320 m²/g
• High-performance products: 320–380 m²/g

A larger specific surface area can improve adsorption efficiency, especially in low dew point and high-humidity operating conditions.

3.Pore Structure Distribution

An ideal pore structure can accelerate moisture diffusion.

High-quality activated alumina usually features:

• Optimized mesoporous structure
• Uniform pore size distribution
• Faster mass transfer efficiency

These characteristics are particularly important for Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) and Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA) systems.

4.Crush Strength

Low dew point systems often operate continuously for extended periods.

It is recommended to choose products with:

• High single-particle crush strength
• Low attrition rate
• Stable long-term operating performance

5.Regeneration Performance

The ability of an adsorbent to be regenerated quickly and thoroughly directly affects its service life.

High-quality activated alumina offers:

• Moderate regeneration temperature
• High adsorption capacity recovery rate
• Stable performance after multiple regeneration cycles

How to Determine Whether Existing Activated Alumina Can No Longer Meet Low Dew Point Requirements?

If the following conditions occur in the system, it may indicate that the adsorbent performance has deteriorated:

• Continuously increasing outlet dew point
• Significantly shortened adsorption cycle
• Poor recovery after regeneration
• Increased pressure drop
• Powdering or breakage of the adsorbent

In such cases, the condition of the adsorbent should be inspected promptly, and replacement with a high-performance activated alumina product should be considered.
